Welcome to Roarke.Industries!

This mastodon instance originated as a place for fans of J.D. Robb/Nora Roberts to talk about their shared interests. There is, however, no need to stay "on topic." All readers, writers, reviewers, bloggers, academics, and industry folk are welcome.

This site is funded by the generous Patrons of Podcast in Death. If you would like to become a Patron and help to fund this site, and the "Podcast in Death" podcast in general, Please see our Patreon page.

The Roarke.Industries Code of Conduct

We want this to be a fun, pleasant, and harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, or religion. We do not tolerate harassment of participants in any form.

Participants asked to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately. If someone asks you to leave them alone, leave them alone.

Unacceptable Behavior

The following behavior is unwelcome anywhere at Roarke.Industries:

  • Persistent and repeated denigration, insults, bad-mouthing of the author (Nora Roberts).
  • Offensive comments related to gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, mental illness, neuro(a)typicality, physical appearance, body size, race, or religion.
  • Holocaust denial and Nazi symbolism.
  • Promotion of fascist, supremacist, or hateful ideology or symbolism, including in choice of user name or avatar.
  • Deliberate or persistent misgendering.
  • Threats of violence.
  • Incitement of violence towards any individual, including encouraging a person to commit suicide or to engage in self-harm.
  • Deliberate intimidation.
  • Publication of any individual's address, phone number, or other private identifying information without consent.
  • Sexual depictions of children.
  • Unwelcome sexual attention, including sharing sexual content with specific users without consent.
  • Publication of non-harassing private communication without consent.
  • Sustained disruption of discussion.
  • Continued communications with someone who's asked that you leave them alone.
  • Unwelcome comments regarding a person’s lifestyle choices and practices, including those related to food, health, parenting, drugs, or employment.

The following behavior is unwelcome on the public timeline:

  • Graphic violent or sexual material without a content wrapper.
  • Gratuitous advertising or spam. It's fine to promote your work, but it shouldn't be the bulk of what you share, and we request that it be kept unobtrusive (see "best practices" below).

Known Harassers:

The admins may ban or silence users whom we know to be harassers or abusers, even if they have not violated the rules of this instance. The mere presence of a harasser can make past or potential victims uncomfortable, and it can put potential victims who are unaware of the person's history in particular danger. Users are encouraged to individually mute, block, and/or report accounts they don't want to see, but at our discretion, we may take the additional step of blocking or silencing someone instance-wide if we believe they endanger the safe and welcoming space we're trying to maintain.

Reporting

The current admin is:

If you are being harassed, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, please contact the admin(s). They'll respond as promptly as they can.

We will respect confidentiality requests for the purpose of protecting victims of abuse. At our discretion, we may publicly name a person about whom we’ve received harassment complaints, or privately warn third parties about them. We will not name harassment victims without their affirmative consent

We will prioritize marginalized people’s safety over privileged people’s comfort, and reserve the right not to act on complaints regarding:

  • "Reverse" -isms, such as "reverse racism," "reverse sexism," "cisphobia", etc.
  • Users pointing out racist, sexist, cissexist, or otherwise oppressive behavior or assumptions.
  • Reasonable communication of boundaries, such as “leave me alone,” “go away,” or “I’m not discussing this with you.”
  • Tone policing.

Consequences

Participants asked to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately.

If a participant engages in harassing behavior, the admins may take any action they deem appropriate, up to and including expulsion from Roarke.Industries and identifying the participant publicly as someone about whom we've received complaints.

Be aware that not every user or post you see in your timeline is a member registered at Roarke.Industries. Users of Roarke.Industries itself are expected to adhere to this code of conduct, and may expect to be engaged in respectful dialogue with an admin if there is any indication that transgressions were a mistake or lapse. Users from other instances may not feel bound by our CoC terms, but violations from non-local accounts will not receive further grace in moderation decisions.

Best Practices

The following aren't hard and fast rules, just suggestions for a positive community experience:

  • Please help keep the community accessible and considerate. In particular, we appreciate alt-text captioning of media files, and the use of content wrappers when a post is likely to be disturbing or triggering for other users.
  • Content wrappers are widely used on Mastodon, and seen as a polite consideration when posting on a topic that others might not wish to engage with immediately (for example: "US election", "mental health", "bad day, personal"). Whether to use them in such cases is up to you, but we encourage you to be open to the idea. We only require content wrappers when a post contains graphic sexual content or gore.
  • When possible, please provide credit for creative works in your posts that are not your own.
  • Advertisements should not be excessive or automated.
  • When promoting your own work, consider the use of a content wrapper, or descriptive hashtags (for example, #Promo, #AuthorPromo, #SelfPromo, #Giveaway, #Sales, etc) so that your post can more easily be found by those who want to see it and avoided by those who don't.

Automated content

  • If posting automated or high-frequency content, please mark it as unlisted. This will make it visible to all users, but omit it from the local timeline.
  • Bots may only interact with users who've invited them to do so.
  • Accounts that only crosspost messages from another service, but never engage as active participants here, may be silenced or removed.
